North Liberty Church of the Brethren

Hero Headquarters Vacation Bible School

July 26th- July 30th 9:00 – 11:30 a.m.

Kids will be introduced to unnamed Bible heroes who were not super or powerful, yet their small acts were used by God to do wonderful things!  They will be challenged to be heroes who do the unexpected, take action, step out on faith, save the day, and stand for truth!  You don’t want to miss it!

Fellowship Time Together

Don’t forget that those interested can meet this month for good food and fellowship at the Yum Yum Shop on Sunday, August 29 after Sunday School.

India:

Brethren involvement in India stretches back to 1895, when Brethren missionaries began working there. Over the span of years of work in India, the Church of the Brethren helped to establish many congregations as well as schools, health care facilities, and other institutions.

In 1970, the Church of the Brethren in India joined together with several other denominations to form the Church of North India (CNI), and the Brethren mission in India closed.

Today the Church of the Brethren continues to be in relationship with two groups in India: the Church of North India and a group of India Brethren who have resisted being part of CNI. Brethren delegations and leaders from the United States have visited in India with both groups. The Church of the Brethren also has facilitated efforts at reconciliation between these sometimes conflicting communities.

Over the past couple of years, efforts have increased to grow the relationship between the Church of the Brethren and both faith communities in India that have Brethren roots. In late 2007, Brethren from India took part in a Historic Peace Churches conference in Indonesia with other peace church groups from Asia, with financial help and support from the Church of the Brethren. In late 2008, the Church of the Brethren also offered support following interfaith violence in India that has affected members of CNI.

July prayer focus: Simple living

Week of July 5: Challenge yourself to drink only water for a day or two, enjoying its simple refreshment. Be conscious of the gift of clean water, and pray for those who are unable to find or access clean water.

Week of July 12: Name the luxuries in your life. What resources do those luxuries demand? How else could those resources be used? Consider readjusting your choices about luxuries to better reflect your faith.

Week of July 19: Spend time with the Holy Spirit wrestling with the statement “Live simply so that others may simply live.” What does that statement mean to you?

Week of July 26: Focus on the “living” part of “simple living.” What does it mean to be alive? How is God calling you to be even more spiritually alive? Share your thoughts with a friend.

August 2010 Prayer Calendar

Continuing the Work of Jesus. Peacefully. Simply. Together.

FOR THIS WE PRAY

Week of Aug. 1: Pray for all the district conferences occurring this summer and fall and for all the ministry occurring at the district level. Give thanks for the diversity of Brethren across the country.

Week of Aug. 8: Pray for the Brethren Volunteer Service units that are training in August and September, that volunteers may find places to fully use their gifts and that the projects they will serve will be a blessing to others.

Week of Aug. 15: Find a favorite spot or a quiet place where you can be alone with God. Listen carefully to the movement of the Holy Spirit and see what new word or vision might come.

Week of Aug. 22: Pray for the disaster relief ministries of the church as volunteers serve in the Midwest, the Gulf Coast, and elsewhere. Pray that Christians may always have generous hearts to serve others who have encountered difficult times.

Week of Aug. 29: As children head back to school, pray for all the young ones in our midst. May we remember Jesus’ call to “let the little ones come.”
